I feel like I'm almost ready to start doing some fun things around my house again and even have the energy to share some of those things with you. Before I get to those, I'd like to share with you a crochet pattern I wrote MYSELF. Emphasis on myself because I have been crocheting my short fingers away the past 2+ years and have both loved and hated many patterns. I realize that I am not always the greatest pattern reader and therefore assume I won't be the greatest pattern writer.

*Note about Size ~
Quite sorry I've not been keeping up the blog and getting more specific instructions for increasing the size. Here is a link to the Ravelry project page for this hat. There are some who have increased the size simply by using a larger hook or by doing one more row of increase {which I know is more difficult mathematically}. Have a look and I hope to one day get a larger pattern written up!
Ravelry Itty Bitty Project Page
For those having trouble at rows 4 and/or 5, here is an explanation that some found helpful. For more helpful tips, read through some of the comments below those post, too.
"With row 4 you are getting the 36 count right? Once row 4 is completed, you should have a pattern of 1 sc, 2 dc repeating. So, when you work row 5 you are working *2 dc into sc, 1 sc in dc, 1 sc in dc* for a 4 stitch pattern.
Maybe check and see if you were doing what Brooke said she was doing. In row 5 instead of the *2 dc, 1 sc, 1 sc* she was working 2 dc, 1 sc, 2 dc, 1 sc, . . . so she was getting more increase. "
As I said, this is my first written pattern for others. I write my work for myself and know how many stitches I should use for a certain hat size. So here goes my first gauge explanation as well.
Gauge ~ 24 st x 10 rows = 6" x 4"
To work gauge, using H Hook
Ch 26; sc in 3rd
ch from hook and in ea remaining st across{24 st}.
R1: Ch 1, turn;
*{sc,2dc} in first st, skip 2 st* repeat to end; sc in last st.
R2: Ch 1, turn; *{sc,
2dc} in sc, skip 2 dc* repeat to end; skip last 2 dc and sc in last sc.
Repeat row 2 nine more times.
Ch 1, turn, sc in ea st across to complete swatch.
6" {24 st} x 4" {10 rows of shell + 2 rows sc}
Hey!! Love how the beanie looks, but I'm missing the gauge - any chances of adding that? :) Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHello! I'll update the pattern to include a short explanation of working the swatch of gauge but the short of the gauge is this~
Delete24 hdc = 6", 10 rows = 4".
Hope that helps! I'm awful about doing gauge.
I ran across this pattern yesterday when looking for a hat to make for a friends baby shower. I made a white hat with grey trim and now. GORGEOUS! Thank you :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome! So happy you liked it. I just love grey; I'm certain the white and grey IS gorgeous.
DeleteAnd I meant to say that I'm glad you were able to follow my pattern. I was reluctant to share because I write patterns for my own thinking and interpretation.
DeleteIm having trouble with row 4/5. I count row 4 and it has 36. But every time I make row 5 it comes out with 54 stitches. I've redone it about 5 times lol what am I doing wrong???
ReplyDeleteOh Brooke, I am so sorry! See, I knew a mistake would be caught. You are correct, it is 54 stitches in row 5. Every other stitch of row 4 is increased; increase by 1/3 of 36 is 54! I've made the correction. Thank you!
DeleteNo you were right the first time. I was miss reading. I was trying to do 2 dc in one stitch and 1 sc and repeating. 48 was correct
DeleteThis is why I love patterns with charts, I just don't trust my own math. Glad it worked for you finally!
DeleteSheila I love this pattern but I am having the same issue as Brooke and I can't find where I am miss reading?
DeleteHi Nicki! I'm not sure; I've worked it a couple times and it counts out correctly for me.
DeleteWith row 4 you are getting the 36 count right? Once row 4 is completed, you should have a pattern of 1 sc, 2 dc repeating. So, when you work row 5 you are working *2 dc into sc, 1 sc in dc, 1 sc in dc* for a 4 stitch pattern.
Maybe check and see if you were doing what Brooke said she was doing. In row 5 instead of the *2 dc, 1 sc, 1 sc* she was working 2 dc, 1 sc, 2 dc, 1 sc, . . . so she was getting more increase.
Let me know if that makes sense and you figure it out. If not, I can see if I can do a video perhaps.
Thanks!! That explanation makes total sense and I was doing the same thing as Brooke so I took that out and did 2dc, 1sc, 1sc, and that fixed my problem. Thanks for the quick response!
DeleteTerrific! You're quite welcome.
DeleteSheila, you may want to correct row 5 in your pattern . . . That is where everyone is messing up. *2dc, 1sc, 1sc*. You have only 1 sc written in the pattern above.
DeleteLove the pattern! Hat is adorable!
I see how you wrote it . . . You mean sc in the next two dc before the next sc, but I think how it is written is what is confusing and that is where everyone is getting stuck. I finally got it after I read all the comments and found this thread. . . .but everyone is probably not reading all the comments. Thanks so much for the pattern. I have two new grandbabies on the way. . . Hoping for one to be a girl!
DeleteI know I have trouble making my thoughts clear. I'll see about clearing it up in the written pattern. Thank you for your help, Camela; and I hope you have a granddaughter soon!
DeleteThank you so much for this free pattern. I made mine and I absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteOh, great! You are so welcome. If I was tech savvy enough, I'd have something set up where everyone could share pictures. Alas, I'm not that brilliant yet!
Deletelove this! if i wanted to make it bigger, how would i go about that?
ReplyDeletehi i am a little lost on how to continue to be able to make it a larger could you guide me through the stitches
DeleteI am working on writing up the pattern for the larger size. This easiest is to increase at R3 by doing a sc and dc in each st, increasing st count to 48 at end of R3. Then skip R4 and continue as described in R5 for a total of 60 st. This will give you at least one size larger hat.
DeleteHope this helps until I get the pattern posted (within next few days I hope)!
Everybody else seems to know this, but what is the magic ring?
ReplyDeleteHere is a tutorial. Once you learn it, you will love it for crocheting hats!
Deletehttp://www.petalstopicots.com/2011/11/how-to-crochet-magic-ring-html/
I am a pattern tester for a major designer. We do a hat a week. I myself cannot do a magic circle. I have an easier way that works just as well. Chain 2 and do your sc in the 2nd chain from hook. It will loosen up on you and when you are done tighten up on teh tail and it tightens just like a magic circle does. I've had no luck with magic circles.
DeleteThank you for explaining your method! !! I'll be using that!
DeleteLove this little hat! Especially the bow! Gonna make it again! I just love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with bows, big and tiny. Happy you like the hat!
DeleteMy sister saw where I had pinned this on my pinterest page and she decided that I need to make it for my three year old niece. Haven't made it yet but I will. It is a lovely beanie. thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSweet! What colors? Next to the bow, I think I just love being able to make this hat with a variety of complimentary colors!
DeleteDo you allow selling of the finished item?
ReplyDeleteYes! Please just give a reference to the pattern. Thank you for asking!
DeleteI love your pattern. I would like to make it larger and saw you had a note about how to do that but I'm confused. You said to add another row or two of increases after Row 5 and to increase as in Row 3. But Row 3 in not an increase row. Should that be Row 4 instead?
ReplyDeleteI notice that the rows alternate between starting with an SC or a DC. If adding two more increase rows, should we keep that same alternating pattern? (So adding two extra rows after Row 5, would be like adding another Row 4 and a Row 5?)
Hello, Jean! Sorry, I have been on vacation {visiting a first grandchild and family stuff} so it has taken a while to get back to you.
DeleteI'm not certain what my thinking was when I suggested increasing after R5, and R3 is most certainly not an increase. I would suggest that an increase be made after R3 as it is done in R2: a set of sc and dc in each stitch.
If an increase row was done, this should change the stitch count from 48 to 60, changing that hat size to about 6~12 months. {See my comment to Loretta above.}
Hope this helps!
Thank you for this beautiful pattern,I love doing them, :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carmel! I'm hoping to work on some more patterns this fall. If they are a success, I'll share!
DeleteHi Sheila, thank you for this pattern, it's looks so beautiful. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble with row 6; I'm okay up to row 5 and I end up with 48 sts, but sc and 2dc in first st then skip 2 sts doesn't add up to 48 sts for me when I repeat this around. Am I reading the pattern wrong?
ReplyDeleteHello Laura~ I think there two possibilities. One, when you go from R5 to R6 you are moving from working with 4 stitches to working with only three. Make sure that you are working 1 sc and 2dc in a stitch, then skipping only two stitches, not three.
DeleteThe second thing is that when you go around, after the last set of sc and 2 dc, you will have two stitches that are unused. These are to be skipped as in the rest of the round. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first sc.
I haven't written patterns for others except for the couple that I have here on my blog. So I am noticing that what I have written is not as clear to others as it is to myself.
Hopefully this helps. Please let me know.
Hi Sheila, sorry took me so long to let you know how the project is going.
DeleteYour instructions are very clear and i thank you for taking your time in explaining what could be the trouble I was having. I let it go for a while to take it up another time with a fresher mind and I am happy to say that the number of stitches are perfect now.
Just wanted to let you know that the project came out beautifully. I appreciate you writing the pattern and taking your time to explain to me what I could of been doing wrong.
Wonderful! Thank you for letting me know it worked out.
DeleteThank you so much for your response. I will try your reply and pay better attention to the instructions...
ReplyDeleteOnce again thank you for this beautiful pattern :)
Your instructions are quite clear and I ended up with the correct number of stitches in each round but for some reason my hat doesn't have the lovely spiral effect yours does. I'm not sure what I did wrong! It still looks okay but it's nothing impressive...
ReplyDeleteAshley, are you crocheting the set in the same stitch and skipping stitches between the sets beginning in R6? You'll notice that in the pictures, the spiral pattern doesn't appear in the first rounds; it happens as the stitches are pulled to the side when there are skipped stitches.
DeleteHope this helps!
Hi love the hat thank you for sharing! I'm stuck on round 7-13, please help. Am I supposed to repeat round for all of those rounds? Also is each of those rounds supposed toned in a hdc
ReplyDeletePlease help I love this hat and really want to finish it for. My girls:)
ReplyDeleteScratch the last question I had...brain fart....it happens, lol! Thank you again for sharing!;)
ReplyDeleteHello, your pattern is great...I tried create this beanie for me, but I'm not sure where I should start increasing....could you please write pattern for adult?just number of st in each round. Thank you very very much
ReplyDeleteI'm quite busy at this time and am not sure when I will write one up for an adult size, but will see about it.
Deletedo you think this would fit an American girl bitty baby size doll?
ReplyDeleteI'm not very familiar with dolls' head sizes. Do you know the circumference? My guess is it may be a little big. You could make it smaller by following the same pattern but using a G hook size instead of an H.
DeleteI'm having an issue with R14...which stitch do I start in? I think I came out with more stitches and it looks funny
ReplyDeleteSorry for late response (getting back on track from holiday visits and vacations). I tried to make the instructions a bit more clear by adding a separate line of instructions for R13. On R14, you are starting with the new color with a ch1 (which doesn't act as the first sc), then sc into the first sc of R13 and in ea st around. Please let me know if this helps.
DeleteR4: Join with sl st to top of first dc; ch 1; *sc in first dc; 2 dc in next sc* around {36 st}
ReplyDeleteAm I missing something, if you have 2dc in each sc around, should you have 48 and not 36.
Hi Sheena! I have to admit that I am not a whiz at math. Whenever I am asked a question about this pattern, I have to either sit down and make the hat again, or, I have to draw a diagram. So, I drew a diagram and it does come out to 36 st in R4.
DeleteR1: 12 stitches.
R2: 24st ; each of the original 12 has 2 worked in it, 12x2 is 12st.
R3: 24st; each of the 24 has 1 worked in it, 24x1 is 24st.
R4: 36 st; every other stitch has 2, so it is (12x1) + (12x2) or 12 +24= 36.
I hope this makes sense. If you look back at the third comment stream beginning with a comment by Brooke, you'll see that I second guessed this myself.
Hope this all makes sense!
As you can see, I am not a liar about not being a whiz with math as in the comment above I state that 12x2 is 12; 12x2=24.
DeleteVery lost when it comes to making it larger did the increase after r3 but do you do r3 again or go to the next round
ReplyDeleteIt depends on how big you want the hat. Each time you increase it adds 12 stitches or about one hat size. The original pattern here is for a 0-6 month size. If you do one round of increase, it will make a size approximately for 6-12 months; two rounds of increase would make a size to fit 12-18 months approximately.
DeleteHope this is helpful! I'm hoping to get around to making some in bigger sizes and will right those up when I can!
Thank you so much for this pattern. I love that the pattern starts right at the top, rather than so many that have simple double crochets for the first several rows. Very very pretty!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Amy. I too don't like the 'wasted' space at the top of the hats which often leaves an obvious transition.
DeleteSorry, I haven't crocheted in a while. Wondering what a magic ring is?
ReplyDeleteHere is a tutorial. It is very simple and I prefer it to making a loop; its faster and neater in my opinion.

ReplyDeletejust wanted to let you know someone is selling your pattern
Does anybody know where I can get this on yotube step by step. That's the only way I know how to
ReplyDeleteSorry, I haven't done any Youtube videos. When life settles down, perhaps I can do one!
DeleteI love this hat, pattern was very easy to follow. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteTerrific!
DeleteHi, Love this hat! Had a question about rounds 7 - 12. When repeating round 6 am i supposed to slip stitch to the top of 1st DC each time or slip stitch to sc? The way i am reading it I would join and then join again?
ReplyDeleteHello! Happy you like the pattern. No, you only join once, to the sc starting in round 7. For round 6, it is a dc, and I just wrote it to repeat round 6. This was my first shared pattern. I write my patterns for myself but shared this one. Hope that helps (and I'll make a note in the post)!
DeleteLoved this had no problem with pattern you should do it in an adult size. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHi, can i ask what the names of the colours you used for this hat?
ReplyDeleteHello! Sorry for the delay as I have been out of the blogging scene lately.
DeleteI used Caron Simply Soft and I believe the colors are Soft Pink and Grey Heather.
Thank you!
It's cute though, but I think I will finish crocheting this in one to two months; it is kind of confusing. I think I will give this to my sister because she loves wearing bows. Thank you for the tutorial; it is wonderful!!
